In this book Drago Arsenijevic tells the story of the work of a small faction of Red Cross workers during World War II, and more specifically 1945, in Germany. Arsenijevic believes the story of this particular faction of Red Cross workers to be worth telling because of the particular ways in which they went above and beyond the normal duty of the Red Cross worker. Far beyond merely providing food or medical supplies to refugees that were already out of harm's way, this select faction of Red Cross workers found themselves delving into the most dangerous areas of Germany; into the concentration camps themselves to yank innocent civilians from the very doorsteps of death.
This select group of Red Cross workers put their own lives on the line to rescue countless souls from the Nazi crematory ovens, and that is why Arsenijevic tells their story.
